Aluminum Profiles 101: A Buyer’s Guide to Alloys, Finishes, and Standards
Author:

If you are sourcing aluminum profiles for the first time — whether for doors and windows, curtain walls, or industrial applications — three decisions will shape most of the outcome: which alloy you choose, which surface finish you specify, and which standard you put in your purchase order. This guide walks through each of them, plus a few tips on evaluating suppliers.
How an Aluminum Profile Is Made (and Why It Matters to You)
Every aluminum profile travels through the same value chain: bauxite is refined into alumina, alumina is smelted into primary aluminum, and the metal is then cast into billets and extruded through a die into its final shape.
Why should a buyer care? Because quality is decided at every step — and suppliers who control more of the chain in-house deliver more consistent products. When a manufacturer designs and machines its own extrusion dies, for example, lead times for custom profiles are shorter and dimensional accuracy is easier to guarantee. China, which produces around 60% of the world’s primary aluminum, hosts the industry’s most complete supply chain — one reason sourcing profiles from China remains so competitive.
Choosing the Right Alloy: Focus on the 6xxx Series
The first digit of an aluminum alloy’s designation tells you its family. For architectural and industrial profiles, the 6xxx series (aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys) covers most applications:
| Alloy | Characteristics | Typical Uses |
| 6063 | Excellent extrudability and surface finish; the workhorse of architectural profiles | Window and door frames, decorative trim |
| 6060 | Similar to 6063, common in European specifications | Windows, doors, light structures |
| 6061 | Higher strength, good machinability | Industrial frames, structural parts, transport |
| 6082 | Highest strength in the series, common in European markets | Curtain walls, heavy-duty structures |
A practical rule of thumb: 6063 for architectural appearance, 6061/6082 when the profile carries loads. If your project specification references a European or American standard, mention it to your supplier early — the equivalent alloy and temper can usually be matched.
Choosing the Right Surface Finish
The finish determines how a profile looks and how long it lasts. The four mainstream options:
| Finish | Strengths | Best For |
| Anodizing | Metallic look, strong corrosion resistance, colorfast | High-end architectural exteriors and interiors |
| Electrophoresis | Extra-smooth, glossy surface on top of anodizing | Premium doors and windows |
| Powder Coating | Wide color range, cost-effective, durable | General architectural and industrial use |
| Fluorocarbon (PVDF) | Best-in-class UV and weather resistance, 20-year-plus performance outdoors | Curtain walls, high-rise exteriors, coastal and high-sunlight regions |
| Wood-Grain Transfer | Timber look with aluminum’s durability | Residential doors/windows, interior decoration |
Climate should drive the choice: for hot, high-UV, or coastal environments — the Middle East, Southeast Asia, coastal Australia — PVDF or high-grade anodizing is the safer investment. For inland residential projects, powder coating usually offers the best value.
Standards: What to Write in Your Purchase Order
Clear standards prevent disputes. The three systems you will encounter most:
● EN 755 — the European standard for extruded aluminum products
● ASTM B221 — the American standard for extruded bars, rods, and profiles
● GB/T 5237 — the Chinese national standard for wrought aluminum alloy extruded profiles for architecture
A capable Chinese manufacturer should be able to state plainly which standard its products meet and provide test reports accordingly. At Jianmei Aluminum, for example, products are manufactured in strict compliance with GB/T 5237, with production managed under ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) certified systems.
Five Questions to Ask a Supplier
Before placing an order, ask:
- Do you make your own extrusion dies? In-house tooling means faster customization and better dimensional control.
- Which surface finishes do you perform in-house? A full finishing chain (anodizing, electrophoresis, powder coating, PVDF, wood-grain) under one roof means fewer handoffs and more consistent quality.
- What is your annual capacity? Capacity determines whether large orders ship on time. (For reference, Jianmei operates two modern production bases with an annual capacity exceeding 120,000 tons.)
- Which standards and certifications do you hold? Look for GB/T 5237 compliance and ISO 9001/14001/45001 certification at minimum.
- What is your export track record? A supplier already exporting to your region will understand its standards, packaging expectations, and logistics. Jianmei products currently reach more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
Talk to Us
Choosing the right alloy, finish, and standard is easier with a manufacturer who handles the entire chain — from die design to final finishing — in-house. If you have drawings, specifications, or a project in mind, send them over: our team will respond with material recommendations, samples, and a quotation.
